The MOOC school

A provocation, and an invitation. Open beside three micro-credentials at the Cork Centre for Architectural Education.

The provocation

A science course hands you the output. Force equals mass times acceleration, the kinds of rock, the way natural selection works. What gets left out is the part a working researcher actually spends the day on: the questions nobody can answer yet, the attempts that did not work, and the claims that are the best available and could still turn out otherwise.

Science is not about facts. Facts are the output, that's true, but we have along the way a whole bunch of ignorance and failure and things we don't know the answer to. And it's important to appreciate both, what we have learned and what we have not yet learned.

This school teaches that part. Ignorance, failure and uncertainty are not endpoints here and they are not moral flaws. They are the working conditions, and all three are now defined terms in the platform's own glossary with those books cited beside them.

The rule everything here runs on

Every simulation is structural and none is predictive. An exercise shows what a change of frame reveals. It never says a number will move by an amount, because nothing on this platform can support that claim, and a plausible-looking projection is the same fault as an invented statistic.

Where a question cannot be answered from the record, the unit says so and names what answering it would take. That gap is the teaching.

The invitation, and why it is not what you expect

Guests are not coming here to give us a hand. The invitation is to give and take: to exchange ideas and share resources among and between all of us, teachers and students, workshops, stories and projects. A mentor arriving with a cohort of their own should find a site worth working in, and should leave having taken something back.

Three things a visitor can check before deciding whether that is true. The platform holds a bibliography with its lineage pairs computed and its gaps visible. It teaches from live records, so a corrected definition reaches a teaching page with nobody editing it. And it says out loud what it cannot measure: figures that were never computed read "not yet measured" rather than carrying a number somebody invented.

What we would ask of a guest. Bring a question your own field has not settled. Not a lecture on what you know. The most useful hour any visitor has given this programme was spent on what nobody in the room could answer.

What the school runs on

One instrument holds the whole set together: a nine-square grid where the generalised principle sits at the top, the special case at the bottom, definitions and tools run across, and the middle is the live probe where a principle meets a case and one of them gives way. Two of its nine cells are usually empty, and those two are the ones worth arguing about: the honest counter-case, and a worked exemplar nobody has recorded.

The three micro-credentials this supports

The school is open and the micro-credentials are assessed. A person can follow the open material without enrolling, and an enrolled student uses the same instruments with a cohort, a tutor and a deadline. Nothing in the open school is a trailer for something better held back.

What this school will not do

It will not predict. It holds no model that could support a claim that a number will move by an amount, and it says so on every page that could be mistaken for one.

It will not present a tidy field. Where two sources disagree, both are shown with the disagreement named, because the disagreement is usually the more useful half.

It will not hide where a framing came from. Material that reached the school through a podcast, a preprint or a conversation is carried and flagged as such, and a transcript is working input that is never quoted as a source.
