Three instruments a student runs in an afternoon. Each takes a drawing decision and returns something checkable about the world: how much territory could supply this specification, which forest a timber schedule actually pulls on, and what a climate does to a body standing in it. Every number below is computed from published data by scripts that ship with the module.

A course teaching only the second half turns research into arithmetic, and a course teaching only the first never has to be right about anything. The dossier both halves are aiming at reports a figure and names the frame it was computed in. A number without its frame, and a frame with no number in it, are the two failures this pair exists to prevent.
How much of a territory could actually supply what I just specified?
A student writes a timber specification in an afternoon. This asks the ground whether it exists. Every 100 metre cell of a real managed landscape in southeastern Quebec carries a count: how many of the seven building groups that hectare could supply. Move the slider and watch the buildable territory collapse.

A specification made only of spruce and fir asks for one thing, and most of the forest can answer.
The cash value
At seven groups the answer is 337 hectares out of 1,649,532. A drawing that takes an afternoon describes something that exists on a third of one percent of the forested fifth of a territory. That gap is the lesson, and no lecture delivers it the way a slider does.
Which forest does a timber schedule actually pull on?
Osborne et al. sort 35 species twice: once by forest traits into seven ecological groups, once by timber traits into seven building groups. Both tables name the same species, so the relation between them is a join rather than an opinion. Here it is, filling in.

What it shows
The matrix is close to block diagonal. Almost every mass timber building is spruce, fir and pine, so almost every specification lands in the top-left block and can only ever pull on two of seven ecological groups.
The specification is not a downstream consequence of the forest. It is one of the forces shaping it.
The 32 empty cells
A cell is empty because no species in that landscape carries both trait profiles. Filling one would mean finding or breeding a tree that does two jobs the region's trees currently divide between them.
The emptiness is a result, and a student can check any cell against the paper in a minute.
And what does the climate do to a body standing in it?
The other half of the module, and the one that makes Rome legible before anybody flies. A weather file, the UTCI index, and the gap between the temperature a brief quotes and the temperature a person feels.
The cash value
Cork holds 30 comfortable hours a year against Rome's 877. Cork's air is 6.8 degrees colder; Cork's experience is 12.7 degrees colder. A student who can explain that gap can read a site. One who quotes the air temperature has not started.
Comfortable means the UTCI band from 9 to 26 °C, for a person standing outdoors. It describes a climate, and it is not a claim about any building.
Where this wants to sit
Every one of these takes the same shape: a decision a student makes on a drawing, and a checkable consequence in the world. That is the whole pedagogy, and it is why the module can carry a studio.
Rome is where the three converge. The climate instrument makes the site legible before the cohort travels. The supply instrument asks what a Roman specification could be built from, and the honest answer is that nobody knows, because the trait table holds no Quercus ilex, no Pinus pinea and no Castanea sativa. That absence is a studio-scale research question with a real method attached to it.
