The other side of the coin

Semester one is not measurement. It is seeing, framing, mapping, atlassing and comprehending, and it is where the creativity in research actually sits. Three working instruments for that half, held in the nine-square frame the module reasons with.

Grey, and deliberately left showing This quotation is attributed everywhere and sourced nowhere. The Dictionary of Science Quotations records that its webmaster “has been unable to find an original source for a direct quote with either wording”, and the earliest printing it can point to is a 2001 teaching manual. So it is admitted here as context and never as evidence. A module about how claims travel should show its own epigraph failing the test it teaches.

How they make one picture. An experiment that confirms its hypothesis has made a measurement; one that contradicts it has made a discovery. A course teaching only the second half turns research into arithmetic, and a course teaching only the first never has to be right about anything. The dossier both halves are aiming at reports a figure and names the frame it was computed in. A number without its frame, and a frame with no number in it, are the two failures this pair exists to prevent.

Where does seeing sit in the frame?

The nine-square is the module’s organising instrument, developed at SCI-Arc and presented at the Buckminster Fuller Institute around 1994 to 1995. Position is address and position carries meaning: the general sits north, the special sits south, and the live instance is the centre cell where a principle meets a case and one of them gives way.

Select a cell. Two carry a gold edge: the honest counter-case and the exemplar. Both are worked and both are labelled as made by the module, because a worked example a student can take apart teaches more than an empty cell waiting for one. You then produce your own, and yours goes into the record under your name.

Instrument one. Why can nobody see the Critical Zone?

Draw the Earth the way every textbook draws it, to scale, and the thin skin where all terrestrial life happens is narrower than the line you drew it with. Arènes, Latour and Gaillardet keep the strata in order and reverse their direction, so the lower atmosphere takes the centre and the core is thrown to the periphery.

What this drawing does and does not claim The radii are to scale and are standard planetary figures. The Critical Zone band is drawn at an order of magnitude, a few hundred metres, because its thickness varies by site and no single figure is correct. In the planetary view it is 0.005% of the radius, which is why it is invisible on any honest drawing. The inversion here is the reordering the paper describes. The sphere-inversion formula that circulates attached to this figure appears nowhere in it, so it is not drawn.

The seeing move

Nothing about the Earth changed. The projection changed, and a zone that was rhetorically central and graphically absent became graphically central.

That is the whole of semester one in one gesture. A frame does work. It decides what can be seen at all, and choosing one is a design act with consequences you can be held to.

Why it is a glove

The reader is not looking at the Earth from outside. They are inside a set of envelopes, feeling them from within, which is why the figure is described as a glove turned inside out.

The glove operation is named in Terra Forma (2022). The 2018 paper reaches for the glove as a figure of speech, and the distinction is worth keeping.

Instrument two. What is an address, once you have inverted the map?

Once the strata are reordered, a latitude and longitude no longer locate anything useful. Arènes proposes a spiral: “We are not looking for the position of a place but for the signature of an event.” The angle between the spiral’s tangent and its radius carries the velocity. A flat spiral is a long residence time; a steep one is fast transit.

What this is A drawing of the coordinate logic the paper states in words. The paper gives no equation for it, so the logarithmic spiral here is the curve that holds a constant tangent-to-radius angle, which is the property the description requires. It is a reading, offered as one, and not a formalisation anybody has published.

Instrument three. Three frames, one site, three different things visible.

Kiel Moe names three coordinate frames. Cartesian holds a fixed grid. Eulerian watches flow through a fixed boundary. Lagrangian lets the boundary move with the material. Same site, same material, and each frame makes a different question askable.

Run it, and watch which parcel each frame can actually follow.

Read the counts. The Cartesian frame reports what is in each cell now. The Eulerian frame reports what crossed its boundary. Only the Lagrangian frame can tell you where this particular parcel has been, and that is the frame a supply chain needs.

Why this one carries the year

Semester one teaches students to choose a frame and defend it. Semester two puts a number in the frame they chose. A dossier that reports a figure without naming the frame it was computed in is the failure both halves exist to prevent.

Discovery is not the soft half

An earlier version of this pitch showed only the measuring instruments, and it made the module look like a calculator. That was the wrong half to lead with. Seeing, framing, atlassing and observing are where the creative work of research actually happens, and they are the half a studio already knows how to teach.

Rome sits across the join. The cohort goes to observe, atlas and frame a city, which is semester-one work done on foot. What they bring back is what semester two measures. One field trip, both halves, and it only works if the studios and the module are pointed at the same site.
