Semester one is seeing. Semester two is measuring. Both are research, and the module is built so a student does each one properly and knows which they are doing.

Seeing, framing, atlassing
Mapping, observation, modelling and comprehension, and the techniques to visualise what you find. This is where the creative work of research actually sits: choosing a frame, and defending the choice. Invert the planetary section and the Critical Zone stops being invisible.
A figure placed inside the frame semester one chose, computed from published data by scripts anybody can rerun. How much territory could supply this specification, which forest a timber schedule pulls on, what a climate does to a body standing in it.

Why both halves are named. An experiment that confirms its hypothesis has made a measurement; one that contradicts it has made a discovery, and a course that teaches only the first turns research into arithmetic. That line is attributed to Enrico Fermi everywhere and sourced nowhere, which is a lesson of its own and is flagged as such on the semester-one page.

Columns are labelled by the Wednesday of each week, which is the teaching day for AT6012 and AT6031. AT6020 runs on Mondays and each of its sessions carries its own date below.
These schedules were planned around the working week. Live sessions sit at lunchtime or in a single weekly block, so a learner in full-time practice can join from the office or site, and a remote learner can join from anywhere. Live attendance is encouraged and never required: every lecture, workshop (laboratory session), and guest talk is recorded, and recordings stay available for the full run of each module. Learners working around jobs or caring commitments can complete any of the three courses entirely from the recordings and asynchronous material, or mix live and on-demand participation week by week.
